Makisig was four years old when the Daluyong pulled him from his family's fishing boat off the eastern shores of Samar and into the sea.. The phenomenon was strange enough and reportedly hadn’t been seen in over thirty years, but stranger still that Maki survived such a violent force of nature.

Maki had been missing for eight days after the boat wreck and the great wave had ravaged much of his town. His mother, Ligaya Ramoso, was consumed with grief and sat upon the shores near their home for those very same days, she neither slept nor ate. At dawn on the ninth day, as she had finally mustered the will to return home, she heard echoes of Maki’s cries upon the beach and when approaching the water found her son floating in the shallows. Ligaya was both overjoyed and confounded as when Maki opened his eyes to look upon her, they shone with a faint blue glow as did a strange series of markings carved over one of his hip bones. Still, Maki’s return was a celebration amongst the townsfolk. They called him Biniyayaan, the boy blessed by the sea, and Maki grew up as a local legend even though as years passed he had fewer and fewer memories of what transpired on the day of the Daluyong.

As Maki grew older, he searched and searched for any shred of information about why his eyes were different from everyone around him and what the markings on his skin meant.
